"Journals have real costs, even though they don’t pay authors or reviewers, as they help ensure accuracy, consistency, and clarity in scientific communication," Science editor-in-chief Marcia McNutt writes in an editorial in which she describes her "love-hate" feelings on Sci-Hub. McNutt worries (perhaps rightly so) that non-profit science publishers will be harmed by continued pirating. 189,567

Hi Rick. I think we are in furious agreement here. I agree that it is unethical (and against every IT policy) to donate your credentials to sci-hub and librarians and administrators should secure their networks against hackers. It’s not just copyright infringement issue, as you say, it’s a university/network security issue. • Full Time (20)

There are over 25,000 universities worldwide, so if every university paid e.g. 200 bucks a month, it would come out as $5M per month, which is enough to fund the publishing end of every last scientific journal in existence and then some (assuming we keep not paying authors and peer reviewers through such publishing, like it is now) 3) I believe if the authors compare Figure 4 with Table 2 in Piwowar et al., 2017, a strong negative correlation can be observed whereby the more likely a paper is to be found on the web, the less likely it is in Sci-Hub. • Western institutions such as Harvard and Cornell have had to cut down their access to publications due to ever-increasing subscription costs, potentially causing some of the highest use of SciHub to be in American cities with well-known universities. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter called it "probably the spring's best new show". [75] Jen Chaney of Vulture gave it a highly positive review, and wrote that it is "A faithful adaptation of the book that also brings new layers to Atwood's totalitarian, sexist world of forced surrogate motherhood" and that "this series is meticulously paced, brutal, visually stunning, and so suspenseful from moment to moment that only at the end of each hour will you feel fully at liberty to exhale". 2 March, 2016 at 7:02 am There is no evidence given that accessing sci-hub to download papers will result in key loggers being placed on computers. So I disagreed with Donald that sci-hub gets credentials by offering free access to papers. (Although it may receive a small number of donated credentials to help with this aspect of its ‘mission’) That’s my only point – there is currently no evidence that accessing sci-hub to download papers will compromise your computer/library/institution. I don’t think anyone should donate their credentials and I am definitely supportive to securing networks against hackers.

Journal paywalls are an example of something that works in the reverse direction, making communication less open and efficient. Alexandra Elbakyan

• 2 Bidwise, Inc, Miami, United States. Yes, but the article presents no evidence that downloading from sci-hub poses a threat. The article is arguing that sci-hub either steals or uses stolen credentials to gain access. But there’s no evidence, only conjecture, that sci-hub modifies the PDFs with malware.

• sci-hub .ren In June 2017, the American Chemical Society (ACS) filed a lawsuit against Sci-Hub in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, alleging copyright and trademark infringement; it sought judgment US$4.8 million from Sci-Hub in damages, and Internet service provider blocking of the Sci-Hub website. [24] On 6 November 2017, the ACS was granted a default judgment, and a permanent injunction was granted against all parties in active concert or participation with Sci-Hub that has notice of the injunction, "including any Internet search engines, web hosting and Internet service providers, domain name registrars, and domain name registries", to cease facilitating access to the service. [6] [25] On 23 November 2017, four Sci-Hub domains had been rendered inactive by the court order [26] and its CloudFlare account was terminated. [27]

And after she told the police what happened, she stopped speaking and hasn’t spoken since. Even the move to Lawton, Alabama, couldn’t draw Maggie back out. In its third installment, however, the drama digs even deeper into the emotional toll Gilead has taken on everyone—both those left in what was once the United States and those who’ve made it out. The lives and dreams that each character lost to this totalitarian regime have been laid out in excruciating detail before—but this week, the show lays those losses bare with more subtlety than perhaps any other episode. ... • All Aech's Basement Post s The government of Gilead was only taking select quotes from the Bible and twisting it to how they needed to use it as their governing practices. During the Women’s Prayvaganze, group wedding, the men recite, Let the women learn in silence with all subjection? All? But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to ursurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve (221)? This passage is letting the women know it is their job to continue to be silent and follow the men. Women biblically should follow the example of their husbands but in retrospect the husbands need to be the ones setting good examples for the wife. The women are being manipulated and made to think that they will be rewarded for all the do and suffer in silence.

Since each article is unique, libraries cannot substitute one journal subscription for another without depriving their users of potentially crucial access. As a result, the price of journal subscriptions has grown at a faster rate than inflation for several decades ( Association of Research Libraries, 2017), leading to an ever-present “serials crisis” that has pushed library budgets to their brink while diverting funds from other services ( Roth, 1990). Meanwhile, publishing has trended towards oligopoly ( Larivière et al., 2015), with nondisclosure clauses obfuscating price information among subscribers ( Bergstrom et al., 2014) while publishers profit immensely ( Morrison, 2012; Buranyi, 2017; Van Noorden, 2013b). Price increases have persisted over the last decade ( Bosch and Henderson, 2017; Lawson et al., 2015; Lawson, 2017a). For example, EBSCO estimates that per-journal subscription costs increased by 25% from 2013–2017, with annual subscription to a journal for research libraries now averaging $1,396 ( EBSCO, 2017).

Similarly, any mention that scientists are allowed to upload preprints to repositories are sequestered in links to individual publishers’ contracts. Several for-profit repositories and Scholarly Collaboration Networks (SCNs) are advertised, but major nonprofit Open Access repositories like PeerJ, Arxiv, and bioRxiv are conspicuously absent. Overall, the site reads like an attempt to “educate” scientists away from more traditional Open Access infrastructure, and, if not to constrain their sharing, then to redirect it toward for-profit platforms. • Digital rights management
