Elbakyan is reluctant to disclose much about how she secured access to so many papers, but she tells me that most of it came from exploiting libraries and universities’ subscriptions, saying that she “gained access” to “around 400 universities.” Maldives

This is a very narrow view of what is of value and ignores genuine open access publishing and innovations such as the increasing use and visibility of preprint servers. It can be argued that, far from being disruptive or publishing’s “Napster moment”, by providing access to such material Sci-Hub is stifling the impetus needed to innovate in publishing.

The Stephen King Top Ten could be argued up and down, but there’s little doubt that The Shining—his most parodied, most famous, twice-adapted novel—is always going to be a contender for the top slot. We rank it number one because it’s in many ways the ideal King novel, the novel scientists would create if they sought to grow a King novel in the lab. Every theme, flat-out terrifying moment, and character is 100% Stephen King working at the height of his powers.

The other day in a HN discussion, someone cited a paper in response to my comment. I was able, in 30 seconds, get to the full text of that paper, which allowed me to reevaluate my opinion in context of what I read. ...if universities didn't have to pay for journal subscriptions. That funding could go towards hiring more professors...

Arthropoda “I do not endorse illegal means for providing Open Access,” says Harvard’s Peter Suber. “For most of Sci-Hub’s existence, I went out of my way to dissociate myself from it because it gave Open Access a bad name.” However, Suber says, Sci-Hub isn’t going anywhere. Elbakyan agrees. She has spare domains. She’s backed up her repository of articles. According to her, even if ACS pressures search engines to black out search results, it won’t matter: only 25 percent of Sci-Hub referrals come via search engines anyway.

Sci-Hub obtains paywalled articles using leaked credentials. [2] [11] The source of the credentials used by Sci-Hub is unclear. [7] Some appear to have been donated, [2] some were apparently sold before going to Sci-Hub, [37] and some appear to have been obtained via phishing and were then used by Sci-Hub. [38] [11] Elbakyan denies personally sending any phishing emails and said, "The exact source of the passwords was never personally important to me." [7] According to The Scholarly Kitchen, a blog established by the Society for Scholarly Publishing whose members are involved in legal action against Sci-Hub, credentials used by Sci-Hub to access paywalled articles are correlated to access of other information on university networks (such as cyber spying on universities) and credential sales in black markets. [39] Several articles have reported that Sci-Hub has penetrated the computer networks of more than 370 universities in 39 countries. These include more than 150 institutions in the US, more than 30 in Canada, 39 in the UK and more than 10 in Sweden. The universities in the UK include Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and King's College, London. Similarly, Daito and Shoto are quite different in the book. While the reader initially is led to believe they’re brothers—and I personally did think one of them was a child, which apparently Spielberg also concluded—it’s revealed they’re not related at all. They’re two lonely adult souls in Japan who have cut themselves off from society, and rely on their families to feed them while they live in a world of pure fantasy and distraction in the OASIS. This is not a dystopic touch either, as Japan’s Labor Department has an actual word for this right now: “Hikikomori.” It refers to people who elect to cut themselves off from society to live like hermits in their anime, manga, and video games. The OASIS would just be the next pop culture opioid. 4. Vocabulary, units, symbols and nomenclature

Rugby union Even today, many reviewers hold that Atwood's novel remains as foreboding and powerful as ever, largely because of its basis in historical fact. [13] [15] Yet when her book was first published in 1985, not all reviewers were convinced of the "cautionary tale" Atwood presented. For example, Mary McCarthy's New York Times review argued that The Handmaid's Tale lacked the "surprised recognition" necessary for readers to see "our present selves in a distorting mirror, of what we may be turning into if current trends are allowed to continue". Good Will Sci-Hub push the industry toward an open-access model, where reader authentication is unnecessary? That’s not clear, Harvard’s Suber says. Although Sci-Hub helps a great many researchers, he notes, it may also carry a “strategic cost” for the open-access movement, because publishers may take advantage of “confusion” over the legality of open-access scholarship in general and clamp down. “Lawful open access forces publishers to adapt,” he says, whereas “unlawful open access invites them to sue instead.”

The Open Access is a new and advanced form of scientific communication, which is going to replace outdated subscription models. We stand against unfair gain that publishers collect by creating limits to knowledge distribution. Those teams receive nothing from publishing either, other than CV credit and occasionally, a copy of the journal. Many of them put their pre-prints on academia.edu and often will email it to you if you ask.

Казахстан I take on board all of the points raised in this article and many reflect valid concerns. However, in the real world of running a research team that works with partners in places such as Bangladesh, Syria, Ethiopia & Malaysia I can only say that SciHub has been a fantastic boon especially to our PhD students who have suddenly been granted free and simple access to a huge corpus of relevant literature. They have downloaded thousands of articles as have many of their peers throughout the world. SciHub has brought instant reliable knowledge to a global audience that includes non-specialists as well as researchers. Colleagues have watched with amusement as the big bad boys in Elsevier, Springer etc tried and failed to block SciHub such that it is now turned into a Robin Hood figure of our times. I may say that I was brought up on the paywall model of scientific publication and have hundreds of papers & dozens of books published by Elsevier, Springer etc but ties are changing and they need to adapt very quickly. I also edit a journal that is funded by a trust and is both free and completely open access. This may be one of the models to look at for the future whereby scientific publishing could become a non-profit service for the global community.

Last year in a landmark American case, The Washington Post called “The Copyright Case that Should Worry all Internet Providers,” a court determined that the ISP Cox (a former head of its Abuse Group, even went so far as to say in one email “f the dmca!!!”) had flagrantly disregarded its responsibility to make some effort to enforce piracy. Thus, it didn’t qualify for the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s so-called “ safe harbor” protection, which grants a measure of legal immunity to ISPs that make adequate efforts to curb piracy. Without that protection, Cox lost a lawsuit to the music rights group BMG, which had hired a third-party organization to levy fees from Cox customers found to be accessing accused piracy sites. • Competitions
