Another dispute arose surrounding a biography of Lee written by a friend and neighbour, Marja Mills. A statement issued in Lee’s name from Carter’s law firm disowned the book, but Alice Lee later wrote apologetically to Mills that the statement had been written by the law office without her knowledge and taken to Harper Lee to sign. “Poor Nelle Harper can’t see and can’t hear and will sign anything put before her by anyone in whom she has confidence,” Alice Carter wrote. < http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1119758> # Sisters
     a
schema:Intangible ;
schema:name " Sisters"@ en ;     .

Teaching Theme I love to teach theme – it really is what literature is all about. Students often have trouble understanding it, so I go over it with just about every text I teach. I use a simple formula: topic + insight = theme. The town children did so, and she looked us over.

I fully expected this film to be slightly underwhelming but possibly a bit of fun and I never read any reviews on here or elsewhere before watching it. It was very funny, witty and thoroughly absorbing. The acting was excellent - Matt Smith, as others have said is wonderful - and the production superb. The peculiarities of the novel are self evident and, when the zombie influences are absent, you could think you are watching another excellent version of Pride and Prejudice. I have now read many reviews on here and am pleased to find that many reviewers have given the film praise. The low score is disappointing so I can only assume that many people have just written off the film either not having watched it or are just trying to be clever and above it all. Some reviews I've read are really quite pompous in their approach. If you have an open mind, an imagination and, preferably a liking for both Austen and zombies you will find this film irresistible. I have noticed that some reviewers say this is just a Victorian / zombie romance. It's Georgian, more precisely Regency and, although a romance, is a story of manners. Great stuff. I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away, "Scout's a cow-ward!" ringing in my ears. It was the first time I ever walked away from a fight.

Elizabeth and Mrs. Gardiner go to Pemberley to call on Miss Darcy. They join Miss Darcy, Mrs. Hurst, and Miss Bingley in the salon. Mrs. Hurst and Miss Bingley do not accept Elizabeth and Mrs. Gardiner with much kindness , but Mrs. Annesley breaks the awkward tension by conversing with Mrs. Gardiner and Elizabeth. After a period of conversation, the ladies are entertained with snacks provided by Miss Darcy, their host, who is particularly quiet and shy. While Elizabeth contemplates whether or not she is more afraid or more desirous of seeing Mr. Darcy, he arrives. He had been fishing with the men, but when he heard that Elizabeth and Mrs. Garndiner planned to call on Miss Darcy that morning, he hurried to meet them. Upon the arrival of her brother, Miss Darcy endeavors to be more conversational. Noticing Mr. Darcy's attentions to Elizabeth, Miss Bingley rudely suggests to Elizabeth that the removal of the militia from Meryton must be a great loss to the Bennet family. Elizabeth counters Miss Bingley’s attack with composure and a seeming lack of interest. Miss Darcy perceives the thinly veiled reference to Wickham and sinks into an embarrassed silence. The visit ends shortly after this exchange. While Mr. Darcy sees Elizabeth and her aunt to their carriage, Miss Bingley continues her criticism of Elizabeth, but Miss Darcy cannot be prevailed upon to join in Miss Bingley's remarks. When Mr. Darcy returns, Miss Bingley continues her critique of Elizabeth, stating that Elizabeth looked ill and that, indeed, Miss Bingley never found her to be pretty. Miss Bingley brings up the time when Mr. Darcy had mentioned that Elizabeth was a beauty, and he replies that Elizabeth is one of “the handsomest women of [his] acquaintance.” After saying this, he goes away from Miss Bingley. During their ride back to the inn, Mrs. Gardiner and Elizabeth discuss their visit with Miss Darcy. They talk of everyone and everything except Mr. Darcy, although he is the subject on which both of their attentions are focused. • NES

• Chapter 55 Another pivotal difference between the two books concerns the decision to make Scout (“juvenile desperado, hell-raiser extraordinary”) the narrator of “Mockingbird” — a decision Ms. Lee executed with remarkable skill, managing the stereoscopic feat of capturing both the point of view of a forthright, wicked-smart girl (who is almost 6 when “Mockingbird” begins) and the retrospective wisdom of an adult.

Into this peaceful calm drops a thunderbolt. Atticus is asked by the town judge to defend a black man named Tom Robinson ( Brock Peters), who has been accused of raping a poor white girl named Mayella Violet Ewell (Collin Wilcox). White opinion is of course much against the black man, who is presumed guilty, and Mayelle's father Bob (James Anderson) pays an ominous call on Atticus, indirectly threatening his children. The children are also taunted at school, and get in fights; Atticus explains to them why he is defending a Negro, and warns them against using the word "nigger." • U-Z

By PBS NewsHour Having never questioned Jem's pronouncements, I saw no reason to begin now. The Dewey Decimal System consisted, in part, of Miss Caroline waving cards at us on which were printed "the," 11 cat,pt 11 rat," "man," and 11 you." No comment seemed to be expected of us, and the class received these impressionistic revelations in silence. I was bored, so I began a letter to Dill. Miss Caroline caught me writing and told me to tell my father to stop teaching me. "Besides," she said. "We don't write in the first grade, we print. You won't learn to write until you're in the third grade."
