In a recent post from the Scholarly Kitchen (09/18/2018), guest author, Andrew Pitts provides collected evidence and real examples of how Sci-Hub is using personal credentials to get into academic institutions — “ While illegal access to published content is the most obvious target, this is just the tip of an iceberg concealing underlying efforts to steal multiple streams of personal and research data from the world’s academic institutions.” • genetic variation in populations of a species

• Bibliography of Ontario We identified 7,312,607 outgoing citations from articles published since 2015. 6,657,410 of the recent citations (91.0%) referenced an article that was in Sci-Hub. However, if only considering the 6,264,257 citations to articles in toll access journals, Sci-Hub covered 96.2% of recent citations. On the other hand, for the 866,115 citations to articles in open access journals, Sci-Hub covered only 62.3%. Sci-Hub access logs offers advice on how scientists can share their research, but buries mention of Open Access journals in links to academic editorials. Similarly, any mention that scientists are allowed to upload preprints to repositories are sequestered in links to individual publishers’ contracts. Several for-profit repositories and Scholarly Collaboration Networks (SCNs) are advertised, but major nonprofit Open Access repositories like PeerJ, Arxiv, and bioRxiv are conspicuously absent. Overall, the site reads like an attempt to “educate” scientists away from more traditional Open Access infrastructure, and, if not to constrain their sharing, then to redirect it toward for-profit platforms. Will Sci-Hub push the industry toward an open-access model, where reader authentication is unnecessary? That’s not clear, Harvard’s Suber says. Although Sci-Hub helps a great many researchers, he notes, it may also carry a “strategic cost” for the open-access movement, because publishers may take advantage of “confusion” over the legality of open-access scholarship in general and clamp down. “Lawful open access forces publishers to adapt,” he says, whereas “unlawful open access invites them to sue instead.” • Sport

0.887 If you take the time to learn some of the etymology of species names, it can tell you a lot about the organism. While collective nouns are more of a whimsical linguistic quirk rather than a scientific classification system, these fun words can evoke an interest into the origin and history of these fascinating and sometimes ridiculous terms. In addition to ease of identification, scientific names can help you communicate information about your favourite organisms to friends, colleagues or fellow scientists from around the world.

Pupils should be able to describe associated processes and key characteristics in common language, but they should also be familiar with, and use, technical terminology accurately and precisely. They should build up an extended specialist vocabulary. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of science, including collecting, presenting and analysing data. The social and economic implications of science are important but, generally, they are taught most appropriately within the wider school curriculum: teachers will wish to use different contexts to maximise their pupils’ engagement with and motivation to study science. Perhaps the most compelling narrative is that of Aunt Lydia, a woman who aided in the creation of the state of Gilead and the only character from the previous book and TV show who receives more than a handful of lines of dialogue. Her chapters take the form of journal entries and reflections on her past in an illegal manuscript. Aunt Lydia is a survivor, a woman who has done what she thinks is necessary to avoid further death and loss. A judge before the coup, she chose collaboration over death and soon rose to become the most influential women in Gilead’s government. Yet she is playing a long game, one of manipulation and capitulation, until she, a woman, can hold all of the power in the masculine state. • Mashup

Elsevier declined to comment on the move, which was reported by negotiators, some affected libraries and Germany's national university association. The Amsterdam-based company instead reiterated a 5 July statement saying it was committed to reaching a deal with the German consortium Projekt Deal, which is brokering an agreement on behalf of hundreds of Germany's universities and research organizations. This means he is reading the shorter version. when he gets to the publication date of THE STAND uncut, will he be reading that entire version as well?

people will try to use methods such as VPNs or tor to bypass the geoblocking ArXiv currently holds around 1,4 million articles and its costs for 2017 were around 1 million dollars. Call it a dollar a year to archive a paper (although this cost of course also includes some “publisher” services, such as a submission system and a very rudimentary editorial review by peer moderators). A world where publishers would charge something of that order of magnitude, is, I suspect, a world where Monbiot would never have written that opinion piece.
