• Media Coverage by oaDOI access status is shown for Sci-Hub, PennText, and the union of Sci-Hub and PennText. Each panel refers to a different State of OA collection, with Combined referring to the union of the Crossref, Unpaywall, and Web of Science collections. The Sci-Hub section of the Combined panel is the same as Figure 7. Impressively, Sci-Hub’s coverage of the closed articles in the Web of Science collection was 97.8%. This remarkable coverage likely reflects that these articles were published from 2009–2015 and classified as citable items by Web of Science, which is selective when indexing journals ( Mongeon and Paul-Hus, 2015). Note that PennText does not have complete coverage of bronze, hybrid, and gold articles, which should be the case were all metadata systems perfect. These anomalies likely result from errors in both PennText (whose accuracy we estimated at 88.2%) and oaDOI (whose accuracy the State of OA study estimated at 90.4%, i.e. Table 1 of ( Piwowar et al., 2018) reports 5 false positives and 43 false negatives on oaDOI calls for 500 articles).

• February Legal and tech activists like the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) immediately decried the injunction. It went too far, the EFF said, setting a precedent eerily similar to previously proposed legislation would’ve worked: ACS theoretically could strong-arm any service that could be seen as aiding Sci-Hub. Forcing internet intermediaries to enforce copyright claims by shutting down accused sites wholesale makes it possible for copyright holders to abuse claims of infringement, says Mitch Stoltz, a senior staff attorney at the EFF. If a website can “disappear on command” without any oversight, there is no incentive to encourage copyright holders to be judicious. Even if a website simply advertises or links to another infringing site, or unintentionally has a few unauthorized reproductions of copyrighted works, not only could a copyright holder black out the site entirely, it would be relatively easy.

You might be surprised what students blow their law school loans on...but anyway, my point about law school was not that we should take out loans for books, but that actually because students already take out large loans to attend, law book publishers use this as an excuse to inflate prices. They know that for law or med school students it's a drop in the bucket for them so they jack everything up. Gen ed textbook publishers increasingly do the same for undergrads, who generally don't know much about financial management. We can't get away with charging $180 for a book. Libraries might still buy it but that's about it. The updated working sci-hub proxy links are given below.

Hi Ilya.. That’s good. This article isn’t intended to cast aspersions on any government or nation. Frankly, even if Elbakyan had been a fellow Indian I would have been equally surprised about how she pulls this off. So I hope you don’t think that there’s some sort of bias against you that influenced this article. Have a great day. • Immigration Made Easy

In practice, readers of the scholarly literature likely use a variety of methods for access. Figure 8 compares several of these methods, as well as their combinations. Users without institutional access may simply attempt to view an article on its publisher’s site. Based on our manual evaluation of 500 articles, we found 34.8% [30.7%–39.1%] of articles were accessible this way. The remaining 326 articles that were not accessible from their publisher’s site are considered toll access. oaDOI — a utility that redirects paywalled DOIs to gratis, licit versions, when possible ( Piwowar et al., 2018) — was able to access 15.3% [11.7%–19.5%] of these toll access articles, indicating that green open access is still limited in its reach. This remained true on the full set of 208,786 toll access articles from the State of OA dataset, where oaDOI only provided access to 12.4% [12.3%–12.6%]. Although oaDOI’s overall access rate was 37.0% [36.8%–37.2%], this access consisted largely of gold, hybrid, and bronze articles, whereby gratis access is provided by the publisher. • Special Education

Portuguese Dictionary There is no doubt that Sci-Hub, the infamous—and, according to a U.S. court, illegal—online repository of pirated research papers, is enormously popular. (See Science’s investigation last year of who is downloading papers from Sci-Hub.) But just how enormous is its repository? That is the question biodata scientist Daniel Himmelstein at the University of Pennsylvania and colleagues recently set out to answer, after an assist from Sci-Hub.

One of the defining characteristics of science is that the evidence, methods, and assumptions used to arrive at a proposed discovery are described and publicly disclosed so that other scientists can judge their validity (Hull, 1988; Longino, 1990, 1994). In one recent example, astronomers at the Green Bank radio telescope in West Virginia identified glycoaldehyde, a building block of DNA and RNA, in an extremely cold area of the Milky Way (Hollis et al., 2004). The discovery of this substance in an area of the galaxy where comets form suggests the possibility that the ingredients necessary to create life might have been carried to Earth by a comet billions of years ago. In a news report of the discovery, the director of the Arizona Radio Observatory, who had criticized the Green Bank astronomers for not being thorough enough, said her students had replicated the Green Bank observations (Gugliotta, 2004, p. A7). The format of literature review on education dissertation comprises three major sections introduction, body, and conclusion.
