E04 - God Bless The Child Some may wish to labour under the delusion that the women belonging to this much vaunted modern civilization of ours are not experiencing the same nightmare as Offred and are at perfect liberty to do what they desire. But I will not.

- Some think that because I dislike this book I'm not a feminist, or am a bad feminist. I hate to break it to everyone, but Margaret Atwood is not feminism's god, and The Handmaid's Tale is not a religious text. If I must attach labels to myself, feminist would be one of them, and I'll say and think whatever I damn well please. And as a feminist, I hate how one-dimensional the men are in this book, just as much as I hate how one-dimensional women are in far more books, TV shows, and movies. Deal with it. Or don't. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series

Schmopera is the brainchild of Jenna Simeonov The keyboard was German because I was living in West Berlin, which was still encircled by the Berlin Wall: The Soviet empire was still strongly in place, and was not to crumble for another five years. Every Sunday the East German Air Force made sonic booms to remind us of how close they were. During my visits to several countries behind the Iron Curtain — Czechoslovakia, East Germany — I experienced the wariness, the feeling of being spied on, the silences, the changes of subject, the oblique ways in which people might convey information, and these had an influence on what I was writing. So did the repurposed buildings. “This used to belong to . . . but then they disappeared.” I heard such stories many times.

• Igor Luther In the book The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood explains that Aunts are always to wear brown, but details about their actual outfits are few and far between. That gave the costume designers for the TV series a lot of room to play with, and play they did. When they were designing the costumes for the Aunts they drew inspiration from a few specific ideas, the first being an almost monk-like religious look to their costumes, and the second being the color of early 20th century English military uniforms. And it seems like the intention behind the designs reads very well, as the Aunts certainly look pious and severe. 3 Wife Clothing Still Denotes Class

Do the ends justify the means, and should the handmaids accept some responsibility for going along with it? The more you read (including the follow-up, The Testaments), the more you realise that's not possible. And if "context is all", what is truth? The show’s depiction of the fertility crisis necessary for its world to exist has always been a little fuzzy (which might be why some of this fetishistic treatment of the young doesn’t land for me). But on a broadly conceptual level, it does make some degree of sense that everybody in Gilead would have gone so far over-the-top in trying to end said fertility crisis that the life of a single child (particularly the child of a couple of powerful white people) would be prioritized over a great many other things. It’s not like you can’t point to a million examples of this happening on a smaller scale in our own reality. • Hanne Orstavik (1 )

30 minutes ago Perhaps this iteration of Atwood’s novel was never going to land. This isn’t the kind of parable that can be neatly wrapped up in 109 minutes and, more importantly, this awkward film is a misguided attempt that never does the source material any justice. Schlöndorff doesn’t touch on any of the novel’s deeper implications until the final scenes, and, even then, they are hurriedly thrown together and only examined on a slapdash, surface level.

“I don’t consider these people to be Christians because they do not have at the core of their behaviour and ideologies what I, in my feeble Canadian way, would consider to be the core of Christianity … and that would be not only love your neighbours but love your enemies. That would also be ‘I was sick and you visited me not’ and such and such … But they don’t do that either. Neither do a lot of the people who fly under the Christian flag today. And that would include also concern for the environment, because you can’t love your neighbour or even your enemy, unless you love your neighbour’s oxygen, food, and water. You can’t love your neighbour or your enemy if you’re presuming policies that are going to cause those people to die.” every rose has its thorn Yesterday at 6:13 p.m.

Reed Morano • Serena and Offred work together to keep themselves (and the baby) safe from a zealot.

A flashback shows June's capture and indoctrination by Aunt Lydia at the Red Center. In the present, after discovering Fred's trips to Jezebels, Serena forces June to take a pregnancy test, which ends up being positive. Serena angrily accuses Fred, telling him the child is not his. After learning the news, Nick and June have a tender moment. Serena takes June to see Hannah, but leaves her in the car. Serena warns June that Hannah will be safe as long as June's unborn child is. Following his trial, Commander Putnam's left arm is amputated below the elbow. The package from Jezebel's contains letters from women who lost family members and have been enslaved in the Gilead takeover. Later, an emotional Aunt Lydia gathers the handmaids and instructs them to stone Janine. The handmaids hesitate and eventually June and the others refuse, dropping their stones. Following this, a black van comes for June, something the Waterfords were unaware of. Nick urges her to trust him and go with them. As June leaves, she whispers to Rita where to find the hidden letters. Meanwhile, Moira reaches Canada, is granted asylum and is reunited with Luke. • Ann Dowd
