TV Shows/Cartoons In addition to having to work very hard, Econowives, like every other woman in Gilead, are forced to submit to their husbands' authority and have no power. They cannot hold paid jobs or be educated. They have a somewhat hostile, envious, and resentful view of Handmaids, seemingly looking down on them for believing they "have it easy," or labeling them as "sluts".

... In Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel, Offred mentions her mother a few times in passing. There are brief flashbacks featuring her mom, who was a proud second-wave feminist and women's rights activist before the meteoric rise of the restrictive Republic of Gilead. One such flashback sees her mother, who is unnamed in the book, taking Offred to an antipornography rally and convincing her to toss a magazine in the bonfire (in the show it's a bunch of women burning the names of their rapists on pieces of paper). Offred resists and touches on how she never saw eye to eye with her mother when it came to women's rights.

Also on Heart The Waterfords, June, and Aunt Lydia travel to Washington, D.C. to stay with the family of High Commander George Winslow. There, they meet with a delegation of Swiss diplomats who are seeking to negotiate between Gilead and Canada and to take part in internationally broadcast mass prayers being held at the former Washington Monument that has now been turned into a giant cross, asking for the return of baby Nichole from Canada. Once there, June and Lydia are shocked and appalled at how in Washington, the leadership caste has taken the rules of Gilead to shocking extremes: forcing all handmaids to be muzzled at all times to cover up small ring piercings used to permanently keep their mouths closed. The two bond, as Lydia tells June she believes that handmaids should not be denied the right of speech. Commander Winslow suggests to Fred that he may have a position for him in D.C. June reunites with Nick, who as a commander is now prepping military forces for the Chicago frontline against the rebels. June makes a deal with the Swiss to convince Nick to provide information on Gilead's power structure. However, they reject talking to Nick upon obtaining information about unstated war crimes committed by him in the early days of the Gilead takeover. June and Serena have an argument inside what used to be the Lincoln Memorial over Serena's change of heart regarding baby Nichole. Afterwards, the Waterfords force June to lead tens of thousands of handmaids massed along what used to be the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in a televised prayer for Nichole's return.

in Gilead are not only forbidden to vote, they are forbidden to When she sneaks back into the house, the Commander is sitting on her bed. He wants to branch out beyond their usual Scrabble game and do something “different” — it doesn’t mean Monopoly, but does require shaving her legs, something she’s normally only allowed to do once a month and with someone waiting outside (because, you know, razors). He shaves her legs with proficiency that makes her think he’s done this before, and he also gives her makeup and a sparkly cocktail dress for their excursion. “Tonight, I’m taking you out,” he tells her. Notice that it’s not an offer.

Program of the Year The bonnets that Handmaids wear are modelled on Old Dutch Cleanser's faceless mascot, which Atwood in childhood found frightening. [7] Fertile women whose social function is to bear children for infertile Wives. Handmaids dress in ankle-length red dresses, white caps, and heavy boots. In summer, they change into lighter-weight (but still ankle-length) dresses and slatted shoes. When in public, in winter, they wear ankle-length red cloaks, red gloves, and heavy white bonnets, which they call "wings" because the sides stick out, blocking their peripheral vision and shielding their faces from view. Handmaids are women of proven fertility who have broken the law. The law includes both gender crimes, such as lesbianism; and religious crimes, such as adultery (redefined to include sexual relationships with divorced partners since divorce is no longer legal). The Republic of Gilead justifies the use of the handmaids for procreation by referring to two biblical stories: Genesis 30:1–13 and Genesis 16:1–4. In the first story, Jacob's infertile wife Rachel offers up her handmaid Bilhah to be a surrogate mother on her behalf, and then her sister Leah does the same with her own handmaid Zilpah (even though Leah has already given Jacob many sons). In the other story, which appears earlier in Genesis but is cited less frequently, Abraham has sex with his wife's handmaid, Hagar. Handmaids are assigned to Commanders and live in their houses. When unassigned, they live at training centers. Handmaids who successfully bear children continue to live at their commander's house until their children are weaned, at which point they are sent to a new assignment. Those who do produce children, however, will never be declared "Unwomen" or sent to the Colonies, even if they never have another baby. Aunts Trainers of the Handmaids. They dress in brown. Aunts promote the role of Handmaid as an honorable way for a sinful woman to redeem herself. They also police the Handmaids, beating some and ordering the maiming of others. The aunts have an unusual amount of autonomy, compared to other women of Gilead. They are the only class of women permitted to read although this is only to fulfil the administrative aspect of their role. ("The Aunts are allowed to read and write." Vintage Books, p. 139. However, on p. 100 of the Vintage Books edition: "They played it (the Beatitudes) from a disc; the voice was a man's." In the Anchor Books edition: "They played it (the Beatitudes) from a tape, so not even an Aunt would be guilty of the sin of reading. The voice was a man's. (p.89.)") Marthas They are older, infertile women who have domestic skills and are compliant, making them suitable as servants. They dress in green smocks. The title of "Martha" is based on the story of Jesus at the home of Martha and Mary ( Gospel of Luke 10:38–42), where Jesus visits Mary, sister of Lazarus and Martha; Mary listens to Jesus while Martha works at "all the preparations that had to be made". Econowives Women married to men of lower-rank, not members of the elite. They are expected to perform all the female functions: domestic duties, companionship, and child-bearing. Their dress is multicoloured red, blue, and green to reflect these multiple roles, and is made of notably cheaper material.

What's the story's message about screen time/virtual life? Why is it important to step away and live in the real world? Things get underway in “The Oasis”, a choral piece very much unlike anything I’ve heard before from Silvestri. It’s clearly inspired by Karl Jenkins’s new age classical work “Adiemus”. “Hello, I’m James Halliday” starts with Bach’s toccata and fugue but it’s not long before Silvestri launches into his warm-hearted, quite brilliant theme for this film and its central character Parzival (more on that later). Mystical choral music appears as the score’s “mystery theme” leads us into some theatrical suspense music and then into the next cue, “Why Can’t We Go Backwards?” which opens with the twinkly, incredibly sweet theme for Halliday – it’s absolutely typical Silvestri, reminiscent of Forrest Gump and so on – and before long we’re onto the fourth theme, an unabashedly heroic little fanfare. Midway through the cue, the action starts – bold, brassy, at times uber-dramatic (there’s even a quote of Max Steiner’s King Kong theme) and at one moment a very, very John Williams-like triumphant fanfare (performed – kind of – on-screen). Another warm statement of the main theme – this time with choir – ends the cue.

Indeed, this is where Atwood’s awe inspiringly persuasive powers reside. By portraying such a bleak situation, she is able to fully demonstrate what life could be like if we suddenly followed the misogynistic views of the old testament with fierce intensity. Women would have no power whatsoever. This would be reinforced by a complete cultural destruction and lack of any form of self-expression. They would not be able to read or write; they would not be able to speak their minds. It would even go as far as to condition them so powerfully, that they completely lack the ability of independent thought. And, to make it even worse, the women know no difference. Sure, the narrator of this remembers her past, but she’s not allowed to. She is forced to repress any sense of individual sentiment. Alli Beckman
