• Early College of Forsyth As a Fireman, Beatty brings the passion of the converted to his work. He despises books because they failed him, and he embraces his work because it is simple and comprehensible. He uses his knowledge in the service of ignorance. This makes him a dangerous antagonist, because unlike other truly passive and ignorant characters, Beatty is intelligent, and he uses his intelligence to keep society ignorant.

The hauntingly prophetic classic novel set in a not-too-distant future where books are burned by a special task force of firemen. Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to burn books, which are forbidden, being the source of all discord and unhappiness. Even so, Montag is unhappy; there is discord in his marriage. Are books hidden in his house? The Mechanical Hound of the Fire Department, armed with a lethal hypodermic, escorted by helicopters, is ready to track down those dissidents who defy society to preserve and read books. The story begins with an inciting incident in which Montag meets Clarisse McClellan. Montag, a fireman who destroys books for a living, is walking home from work one day when the young Clarisse approaches him and introduces herself. Clarisse is the antithesis of anyone Montag has ever met. She is young, pretty, and energetic, but more importantly, she converses with him about things that he has never considered. Her inquisitive nature fascinates him because she ponders things such as happiness, love, and, more importantly, the contents of the books that he burns.

The intended message of this 62-year-old novel is different: a prescient warning about the addictive power of continuous, passive imbibing from the virtual worlds and interactive screens that are our constant companions. I guess Bradbury was so infused in bookish culture himself that he didn’t realise how loudly the literary message shouts from every page, almost drowning out everything else: read me, love me, touch me, treasure me. Reading is a physical, sensual, transformative relationship, not merely a mental process. See this excellent article (thanks, Apatt!) for Bradbury's views on the persistent misinterpretation of his book: LA Weekly article. Biloxi Blues is an underrated wartime coming-of-age flick. Bradbury’s books of short stories include The Martian Chronicles (1950) , The Illustrated Man (1951), and I Sing the Body Electric (1969). As always in his writing, technology takes a backseat to the human stories. He wrote his first novel, Fahrenheit 451 (1953),on a rental typewriter in the basement of UCLA's Lawrence Clark Powell Library, where he had taken refuge from a small house filled with the distractions of two young children. Ballantine editor Stanley Kauffman, later the longtime film critic for the New Republic, flew out to Los Angeles to go over the manuscript with Bradbury, plying the sweet-toothed perfectionist author with copious doses of ice cream. The book came out to rapturous reviews. To this day it sells at least 50,000 copies a year and has become a touchstone around the world for readers and writers living under repressive regimes. 2 episodes, 2018

The descriptions of fire are also the best feature of Bradbury's short story A Sound of Thunder which I reviewed HERE. #sharpobjects #hbo #amyadams #recovery when I read this book four or five years ago, i was in a dark place. I'd relapsed after years of not drinking and was still trying to tell myself that I had it under control. Like buying single portion bottles or cans (the "to go" cans! A gift to every sneaky alcoholic!) So I could keep track of how much I drank (3 to 4 portions on a "good" day — who the fuck knows on a bad) I can remember being in my bedroom reading about Camille and her struggle – and she felt like me inside. I had it together on the outside but inside – under the clothes – I was riddled with scars that formed words. Help me. See me. Believe me. And like my heroine I was addicted to finding clarity and truth. Maybe not for myself yet, but Camille showed me that bravery includes being able to look at the ugly things. About others and yourself. The journey can be very dark. And sweaty. Really sweaty. And parts of it can even be fun, but you'll die if you live in the past. Her journey made me say — I have to do this for TV. I HAVE to. Little did I know that meeting @thegillianflynn would be like meeting a sister from another mister and that she and I would go on so much of the TV journey together. The writers room was gifted by her (and #ScottBrown!) and her wicked sense of… Everything. And her book led the way while every script came together (including hers scripts, because she's a kick ass screenwriter too). What a trip. By the time we got into that writers room — by the time rights were secured, #amyadams came on, #jeanmarcvallee came on, the project was sold to #hbo, that house was found and built and… I was solidly sober again and back on the path of light. It'll be three years in February. How did I do it? I searched for the truth about myself and work every day on accepting it. That the world is full of good and bad, and so am I. That it is ugly, sexy, amazing, heartbreaking, euphoric, disappointing, surprising and well worth being awake for every single bit of it. ‍♀️

Of significance in this part of the book is that Faber bears a close resemblance to Carl Jung's archetypal figure of the "old man." According to Jung in his essay "The Phenomenology of the Spirit in Fairy Tales," the old man archetype represents, on the one hand, knowledge, reflection, insight, wisdom, cleverness, and intuition, and on the other hand, he represents such moral qualities as good will and readiness to help, which makes his "spiritual" character sufficiently plain. Faber displays these qualities, and he, like Clarisse, is associated with the color white, symbolic of his spiritual nature: "He [Faber] and the white plaster walls inside were much the same. There was white in the flesh of his mouth and his cheeks and his hair was white and his eyes had faded, with white in the vague blueness there." The color white is significant here because it indicates purity and goodness. White is also the opposite of the blackness of the burnt books and the dark ashes into which they are burned. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) approved this addition to the HTTP protocol in 2015. It should be noted that sites can be forced to display a standard 404 through legal means, so this is by no means a reliable way of telling how much of the world’s information is being blocked—but it’s s start, as well as a marvelous legacy for Bradbury. • NMTA English Language Arts (301): Practice & Study Guide
